Going to Italy in May?

Okay, so I’m so excited to be going to Italy in May. The only problem is that I have no idea how much to bring! My flight and hotel is already booked and whatnot so I need some money to bring along for shopping, eating, etc. So far, I have $275. I’m thinking of going up to $450? Should that do it or?

And also, is there any places for me to visit that is very affluent for art history majors (like me) without looking like a tourist? I want to study the architecture and paintings of Italian Renaissance, but I need to avoid those awful tourist crowds. Suggestions?

Is it going to be warm there?

Yes it should be warm then, round about 20 -25degrees celsius, of course it will be warmer in the south but quite nice in the north as well….

for the other questions, we could need some more information. Where are you staying exactly and how long will you be there? So I can’t tell you if it is enough money… And of course it would be easier to give you tips on what to see if I know where you will be, but I can give you one general rule: go to the less known churches. they sometimes have great treasures of renaissance art. I did that in Rome and in Florence and it was great.

My next idea is to go to Mantova (in Lombardia). If you are in that area, you should not miss it. It was the city of the famous Gonzaga. Andrea Mantegna lived and worked there for decades and made some of his best works (camera picta) and also his own house should be great. But there are also works by Alberti and so on. Then after Mantegna, Giuilo Romano worked there and made his gr ear mannerist masterpiece, the ‘Palazza de te’). Then just half an hour away, there is Sabbioneta, an ideal city of the renaissance.
