Joseph Cornell: Mixed Media Artist

Mixed media artist Joseph Cornell wasn’t a sculptor, a draftsman, or a painter. This globally renowned modern artist never got professional training. He was first and foremost a collector. He liked to scour old book stores and secondhand shops of New York trying to find mementos, theatrical collectibles, old images and photos, music scores, and French literature. Joseph Cornell was born on Christmas Eve 1903. Cornell was raised in a grand house in Nyack, New York, a charming Victorian town on the Hudson River. He was the oldest of 4 kids born to Helen and Joseph Cornell. He had 2 sisters, Betty and Helen, and a brother, Robert.

In spite of his relatively sheltered life, living as a grown-up together with his mom and brother, his art was contemporary and sophisticated. His most famous and unique works were boxes he created out of wood, glass, and innumerable objects as well as photos he collected in New York City’s antique and secondhand stores, which communicated a lyrical and magical feeling. His very first work at 18 was as a salesperson in the textile business. At this moment, he as well started to collect all sorts of natural things, collectibles and antique and modern-day pictures, and organized these ‘found’ materials into collages and constructions. In 1931, he observed an exhibition of Surrealist art in a New York gallery, and later on met Surrealist writers as well as artists at the Julien Levy Gallery, eventually showing his work in Surrealist exhibitions. Artistic influences involved Dada artists Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, and Surrealist Max Ernst; additional influences were his interest in ballet, music as well as literature.

By the year 1936 Cornell had established his signature format: the glass-fronted, handmade wooden box that contains evocative arrangements of such objects as thimbles, old pictures, marbles, as well as seashells. Untitled (Soap Bubble Set) (1936, Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut) is actually the first work in this particular genre. The work consists of a box that Cornell covered with light blue cloth and an antique French map of the moon and in which he set up a clay pipe, a cordial glass holding a colored egg, a doll’s head attached to a white wooden pedestal, along with other objects. He also designed boxed homages to historic opera singers as well as ballerinas, and he often drew from art history. One example of this is The Medici Slot Machine (1942, private collection, New York City), which includes a reproduction of a portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici, an important Renaissance patron of the arts. Cornell’s containers impacted American pop artists which include Robert Rauschenberg, who in the mid-1950s merged disparate objects to create big, collage like sculptures often known as combines.

During the mid-1950s Cornell resumed creating two-dimensional collages, sticking together colorful clippings from modern-day books, publications, as well as art reproductions. He also produced several motion pictures, some of which he gathered from dumped Hollywood video clips to make a surrealist effect.

Mixed media artist Joseph Cornell provides a terrific example regarding how art is not defined by just one medium. He was genuinely one of the best American artists; one of the pioneers and most famous exponents of assemblage and was additionally an avant-garde experimental moviemaker.

Clara Berta is one of the best mixed media artist in the world. At the same time, her wonderful abode, Villaberta is also a great artist studio used for filming locations. Architecture and art sum up Clara’s amazing talent.
