The culture, the history, the food, the romance: It’s all part of Italy’s allure and, perhaps, part of the reason that millions of travelers visit the boot-shaped country each year. College and university students spending semesters or summers in Italy as part of studying abroad become entrenched in western European life while they earn academic credits, explore area sites and get to know the locals.

Each year for the past couple of decades, more students have been participating in Study Abroad programs. The Institute of International Education, in a 2009 Open Doors report, noted that the number of Americans in 2007-2008 academic year Study Abroad programs increased by 8.5 percent over the previous year and by more than four times the number who participated in Study Abroad programs 20 years prior. Italy, with the Western European countries of England, France and Spain, has consistently remained a leading Study Abroad destination, the Open Doors report noted.

Through Study Abroad opportunities, architecture students might explore the Renaissance style St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, its dome designed by Michelangelo. They might also stand amid the  1st century AD Colloseum in Rome, where gladiators have fought, dramatic presentations have been staged and Christians have been buried. Students of the arts might also say “Viva Roma!” – and  “Favoloso Firenze!” (Fabulous Florence), its Historic Centre a former Etruscan settlement where galleries display the works of Botticelli, Michelangelo and others.

In fashionable Milan, Study Abroad participants are likely to spot locals sporting the designs of Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani and others. Study Abroad students might also find themselves becoming a part of the business climate in Italy, which the BBC reports boasts Europe’s fourth largest economy and has residents earning some of the highest per capita incomes in western Europe. Study Abroad students in environmental programs might venture to Venice, where rising waters in this city of canals are considered a sign of global climate change.

The study art abroad opportunities are offered by colleges and universities and private organizations, some working in partnership with Italian institutions of higher education. As part of at least one Study Abroad Italy program, undergraduate and graduate students study design at Milan’s Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti di Milano and the Domus Academy. CAPA International Education offers a Study Abroad program to Florence whereby students study fine arts, the Italian language and take associated courses such as Italian literature and Italian life and culture and reside either with Study Abroad students or with host families.

There are other, less trodden regions where Study Abroad programs take place as well. In the medieval city of Viterboro, where the University of Tuscia is situated, the University Studies Abroad Consortium offers Study Abroad programs in the environment, art, history and Italian studies. This same organization takes Study Abroad participants also to the city of Torino (Turin), for studying art, architecture, international business and more. Museums, churches and opera houses are situated in Torino, along with the headquarters for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Nutella and Martini & Rossi. Still, the city is likely most often associated with the Shroud of Turin, a cloth with an image that many say is Jesus of Nazareth.

Study Abroad participants, through an organization known as CIEE, can learn about cultural and gender topics and art history in the Italian city of Ferrara. CIEE Study Abroad participation also includes intense Italian language studies. All courses are held on the campus of the University of Ferrara, which dates back to 1391, but Study Abroad participants also visit area museums and other sites, along with nearby cities.

Italy, which the Studies Abroad Consortium has called the “Eternal Seductress,” has a lot to offer Study Abroad participants in many disciplines. Study Abroad participants might expect to pay somewhere around $10,000 to $15,000 for semester-long programs in Italy, with airfare additional. When considering Study Abroad programs from outside organizations, students might want to make sure the college or university they attend accepts all of the credits and determine whether they have to achieve certain grades in order to receive those credits. Students might also be able to apply financial aid to the programs and obtain study programs abroad scholarships specifically, which might make the educational travel experience even more enjoyable.
