Wooden Practice Swords Have Been Used For Centuries Because They Are Cheaper Than Steel Swords
For training purposes the wooden sword has been in use for many centuries. The Practice Wooden Sword has been used by many cultures including China, Japan, Renaissance Europe, Scotland and Rome and more recently in modern Europe and the United States.
The term “wasters” is often used to describe a wooden sword because they are cheap to replace. Wood has become the material of choice for training swords because quality steel swords are more easily damaged and are more expensive to replace.
Ancient warriors used wooden swords, for training, as a substitute for steel which would fatigue with constant use and become unrealiable as a weapon.
Wooden Sword Practice is therefore a cheap means of training because the cost of replacing a wooden training sword is substantially less that the cost of replacing a steel sword. Another benefit of the wooden sword is that it is blunt and contact with another person when training will minimize the risk of injury.
Blunt steel swords are available, but they are more easily damaged, carry a higher risk of injury than a similar impact from a wooden sword which is less expensive.
Sharpened steel blades are generally not used for training purposes because of the high risk of seriously injuring, maiming or even killing someone.
Weight and balance between a wooden sword and the equivalent steel sword can differ however training with a wooden sword will allow its user to develop technique and feel, ready for when they first purchase a steel sword.
Wooden Practice Swords are used these days in Western Martial Arts and some Japanese Martial Arts and many of the modern wooden swords are manufactured to replicate handling characteristics and feel of the original steel weapon.
Some Martial Arts involve the use of swords and anyone interested in this sport should start with a wooden training sword to minimize their outlay and allow for training with safety compared to the use of a genuine steel sword.

Songs from the Labyrinth $5.97 In choosing to cover the music of John Dowland (1563-1626), who is known as the “melancholy madrigalist” from his output of cheerful ditties like “Flow My Tears,” Police bandleader Sting has entered into a whole new realm of austere eeriness. Originally inspired by the gift of a lute, the rock superstar and activist sings the songs, deliciously sweet and tender or spirited by turn, accompanying h… |

Chanticleer: Magnificat (A Capella Works by Josquin, Palestrina, Titov, Victoria, and Others) $8.88 In the wake of its previous, Grammy-winning disc of contemporary madrigals (Colors of Love), the all-male a cappella ensemble that calls itself Chanticleer–in homage to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales –comes home to roost in this theme album of early music. After all, this is the territory that Chanticleer first staked out when the group banded together in 1978, and the return is most welcome. … |
