Graphic Design’s Roots: Oscar Wilde, Influential in the Field

By the end of the 19th century, graphic illustrators were utilizing shape, pattern and design to enhance their work. One man who had a major impact on popular design of that time was Aubrey Beardsley.  Beardsley became a motivating force that created art and architecture that is highly valued even to this day, all before his death at the age of 26. During his short career, he created and popularized his own unique interpretation of the art nouveau style, which subsequent artists have endeavored to copy at different times throughout the 20th century. Oscar Wilde advocated and patronized an assortment of artistic movements, methods and styles. He deeply regarded the practice of art as an end unto itself. He felt that assessing art by ethical or standards was a misguided notion. He quickly became a polemical and substantial literary presence and remained so during his brief life. Wilde was drawn to Beardsley’s style, which was much like his own writing style; rich, erotic and fanciful. Wilde chose foreboding titillation juxtaposed with graceful, sweeping lines to bring more even controversy to his piece. He added patterns and ingenious contortion.

His work often illustrates the interaction between black and white. Literally playing on a white surface, he makes use of larger planes and borders, or just darkness that will contrast with some delicate patterns. Large, continuous, twisting curves create movement on his commonly asymmetrical page. Human characters in these drawings were generally created with deceptively simple outlines in contrast to the complexities of their environment and the objects that they interact with on paper. This interactions between complicated details and simple, clean lines create much of the strength in his art.

Japanese art, as well a a revival in medieval art forms and early Renaissance work inspired designers at the end of the 19th century. Appearing in many famous publications, the young illustrator’s artwork and illustrations were  a strong influence in both the United States and Europe. Currently, many of his pieces are often reproduced as posters and prints. As a person looking for outsource graphic design you should visit that site.

The late 19th century also saw the development of the poster from a medium used in commercial advertising to an art form in its own right. Posters shined in color, unlike books, which were printed in black and white. The leaders of most poster designs started focusing on a large, eye catching image with bright colors. Any words written to give information about an event or product were kept to a minimum. He worked with powerful colors and simple shapes that were flat so that he would seize the viewers’ attentions. The lines produced by this artist were usually somewhat halting and broken, not unlike those of an impressionist’s work. That’s the reason his work is still considered as the forerunner of the classic art nouveau designer poster.

Another artist known for bolder lines and more flowing curves is considered as the father of the prototypical art nouveau poster. These posters typically feature youthful, flowing, slender girls with cascading hair. Their hair continues off their bodies and shifts into capricious shapes. A single full-length female image was another famous art nouveau poster; these works were created with narrow strips. Patterns within these works are often inspired by fold art, Celtic works, Japanese woodcuts, mosaics from the Byzantine Era, Moorish & Arab decor, and the Hebrew alphabet.

Talented turn of the century graphic designers produced many drawings which can now be seen in reprints and books, if you look for them. You will also find there are dealers who will specialize in the sale of 19th, and early 20th century poster art. These dealers can frequently be found in stand-alone stalls at big antique markets. These original pieces, in good condition, have been known to sell for thousands of dollars.
