The Renaissance, French for “rebirth” was a period marked by cultural, social and economic rebirth ad revival. It stemmed from the dark period of the Middle Ages, a period where culture and the economy had very little achievement under strict Church beliefs and political feudal laws. The Middle Ages was also marked by a period of fatal death with the occurrence of the bubonic plague, which caused massive deaths and decreased populations in Europe. After recovering from the deadly effects of the plague, a dominant middle class and capitalist economy began to emerge as various tradesmen, bankers, accountants and guilders formed lucrative businesses. Because of their newly acquired wealth and comfort, this new middle class also began to acquire a taste for leisure, art, education and cultural activities. This cultural and economic richness forged a rebirth or a “renaissance” of classical Greek and Roman principles.

Aside from spreading all throughout Europe, the Renaissance and its products were best witnessed in Florence, which was the seat of numerous artists, philosophers, architects, engineers, poets and playwrights. One famous sculptor of the early Renaissance period was Donatello. Admired and greatly respected as an all-around sculptor of his time, the artist is said to have set his art of sculpture apart from the rest due to the vividly accurate, life-like quality of his sculptures. His sculptures have been known to portray human expressions, shadows, movements of fabric, human proportions and actions in the most natural manner. One of his best works include his rendition of David, cast in bronze. This statue is said to be the first free-standing or unsupported nude bronze sculpture since Classical times.

Donatello’s David and other sculptural masterpieces can be seen at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.
