How It Happened: Brief but Glorious History of Glamour Images
As a prominent artistic school, Glamorous Photography has been altered dramatically through the past years; knowledge of what happened to it earlier can give us the clue of what awaits glamour images in the future. Like any other genre of photography, it witnessed some dramatic changes, withstood many cultural revolutions to finally emerge in its present state.
I will gladly take you on a short mind trip from the very dawn of Glamour Images to their modern state – afterwards we will dabble in foreseeing their probable future.
Childhood. Nobody really knows from where to begin the history of beauty photography genre. Some derive it from so-called French postcards which were quite popular in the streets of Paris in the early 1900s, some address to Victorian pioneers of this art. A few people consider that beauty photography can be traced as far back as Baroque and Renaissance art. To put it simply, the question of origin of glamour photo is far from being answered. I prefer to consider that classic and contemporary fine arts contributed in equal measures to create this unique genre and it is the melting pot of 1920s culture that we owe its birth. We can clearly trace the classic glamour images beginning from the first half of the former century.
Zenith of Glory and Later. Those were difficult but glorious years. Shining star of Betty Grable was in zenith ever since pre-WWII time; in 1953 Marilyn Monroe emerged on Playboys cover and led glamour photography from darkness of controversy and public outrage into the light of recognition. Glamour images became more and more popular, as Pamela Green and others helped this young but prospective genre to become widely recognized.
Modern Times Going Digital. As time passed, glamour photography became colorful, frivolous, scandalous and much more ingenious. Dita von Teese and Hope Talmons gained young and ambitious competitors like Heidie Van Horne, Lucy Pinder, Bernie Dexter and others. At the same time, film surrendered positions to digital photography. It improved technical side of the process and altogether simplified it beyond measure. Any amateur with a DSLR became a potential glamour photographer. In a combination with Web technologies, this was like a clamor of billions and billions of both talented people and senseless dabblers.
3D Death, Downfall, Decay? Now we are at the beginning of something completely different – 3D-rendered glamour images have become another fancy, competing with traditional photography. This new form of art attempts to challenge the canons of glamour photo. I strongly believe that no artificial computer rendering can ever excel the natural beauty and genuine work of a talented artist. If it is really a competition between old and new, I would like to remain on the side which has a beating heart, long hours of studio work and live relationship to it.
I feel optimistic about the future oils, film and digital have found their admirers and seem immortal. Artistic 3D may join these ranks, and so may whatever comes next. It is not technology that is behind each glamour picture its the soul, the inspiration and the dedication: that of photographer and the model. No real photographer ever forgets this – and I’m sure that neither will you.
